A lot of effort and expense in Internet security is directed towards ‘keeping the bad guys out’. This is half the solution. What is overlooked, and equally critical, is how to keep the important data within. Internet content security is about keeping the ‘bad stuff’ on the outside of your network. Data leakage is concerned with keeping the ‘good stuff’ on the inside. Who are the primary culprits on data leakage - your own staff. Read on to see how leaks can occur and what measures you need to be taking to manage your environment.
What is Data Leakage?
There are two primary data leakage elements to be concerned with:
What data you should protect and
What constitutes a leak?
Data that is sensitive, or the ‘good stuff’, covers a range of corporate assets such as:
Intellectual Property (IP) - company secrets, product designs, mathematical formulas, research papers, source code, patents, schematics, recipes, proposals, reports, etc.
Commercial Information - financial reports, employee payroll, contracts, business plans, acquisition targets, product and marketing launch plans, budgets, customer databases etc.
Confidential Information - patient health records, customer financial information, legal contracts, employee resumes and agreements, reprimands, pre-release reports, etc.
How Does Leakage Arise
We are sending the wrong data receiver fixing wrong file or e-mail.
Intentionally sending information from the competition by the employee.
The disclosure of confidential information.
Sending confidential information to the UN-encrypted form.
Interior and with the Web address or e-mail that is not shown on sensitive issues with externalparties.
Data Leakage Is More Common Than You Expect
The issue with data leakage is not how common it is, but its severity, the nature of the data and how it has been leaked. With the span of data and the conduits for ‘leakage’, almost every company can attest to an incident of an internal security breach - willful or accidental. These breaches include loss of information and Intellectual Property theft. Interestingly, the majority of incidents came from inside their organizations.
One IDC study from late 2007 shows that 84% of all data leakage incidents can be attributed to employees. And the methods for stealing data increase - Blackberries, USB key drives, torrent uploads, and instant message file transfers. Companies should be more prepared than ever to monitor and control these activities.
What does Data Leakage look like when it is discovered? Here are some recent media stories. Imagine putting your company name in place of the one listed. For example,
Apple suffered significant embarrassment after two employees revealed secret new product information on their personal blog sites.
A statistician employed by the Palm Beach County, Fla., health department inadvertently emailed his colleagues the names of 6,600 locals known to be infected with HIV and AIDS. This was a serious breach of the Federal laws on handling patient information and ensuring patient privacy.
Honeywell International Inc. says a former employee has disclosed sensitive information relating to 19,000 of the company’s U.S. employees.
What are the Costs of Data Leakage?
The costs can span many areas. These can be anything from public embarrassment to financial loss, reduced stock equity, loss of competitive advantage or even criminal investigation and prosecution. In the case of Apple, where their employees revealed product information before it was released, the company’s share price plummeted after the leak was revealed. The company was forced to fire the employees involved, resulting in embarrassment, lost productivity and legal costs.
In the incident with the Palm Beach health department, the apparent violation of the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) could result in prosecution, not to mention the loss of patient confidence in the department’s ability to protect their information. When the action damages an image or reputation, the financial costs of data leakage are very hard to quantify.
In more tangible matters, like IP loss, a damage assessment can probably be compiled. Consider a hypothetical scenario, where a company’s new MP3 player designs and specifications are leaked to a competitor before it is launched. This breach could undermine the company’s entire business and lose millions of dollars in revenue. Imagine if the Ipod design was leaked - what would this mean to Apple in lost opportunity. The damage can be embarrassment, loss of professional reputation and possibly boost in the competitor’s market advantage.
Conclusion
Data Leakage is real and it starts on the inside. We often spend so much time building a wall around our enclaves that we do not consider risk internally. Unfortunately, real incidents are telling us we should look inward first and then outward. How secure do you feel about your data leakage prevention efforts?
We work with companies to assure their data and messaging is in compliance and secure. As Scareware threats are on rise, millions of Internet users are falling pray to the Scareware scams.
Scareware refers to bogus sales tactics that are designed to scare a user into believing that his or her computer contains critical errors or viruses that have to be fixed immediately. Scareware ads offer an instant solution to the so-called problems on the computer and come for a price. In some cases, this software is harmless while in others it is actually a malware or another spyware. The ad might pop up anytime when surfing the web. The ad may open a pop-up window leading people to believe that the message is triggered by their own Operating System. The message claims that the consumer’s computer is infected with a virus and may require a “fix” and that clicking on “OK” would take the user to the download site from where the user could purchase the “fix”. By luring the victims to buy the software, the perpetrators may even steal sensitive information such as credit card details of the victim and these details may be sold to black market forums.
As of June 2009, over 250 rogue programs had been detected by Symantec in a study, which spanned over June 2008-09. Bogus security software could be freely available, may cost up to US $100 or come in a trial version. They may be installed manually by the user or when he opens an attachment or while surfing through a malicious website. Scareware can also be unknowingly advertised on legitimate websites such as social-network sites, forums, blogs, and appear in search engine results that are sponsored by cyber criminals. The crooks also hire sales representatives to sell their products who earn an average of US $23,000 a week. They are paid for every installation they make and even get bonuses like electronic gadgets and luxury cars.
Another type of scareware is to scare users is to use unanticipated images, sounds or video and is known as Prank software. An example of this kind of software is “NightMare”, which when executed lies dormant for some amount of time, finally changing the entire screen of the computer to an image of a skull while a horrifying shriek is played on the audio channels.
Many cases have been filed against the perpetrators of such sites and they have been asked to pay for the damages caused by them. In 2005, Microsoft and Washington State successfully sued Secure Computers for US $1 million over charges of using Scareware pop-up window. Various regulatory agencies and the U.S. Federal Trade Commission is taking an active part in trying to end this threat.

Technology has brought along with it some criminals too who have found many crooked ways to use the internet to deceive people. They do this by robbing them of their identity and their life savings too. Most people begin to react to phishing attacks slowly as they get completely devastated to find that they have lost everything they have got. This is why even though it may be difficult for most to handle phishing attacks at least we must be aware of how to stop phishing.
To stop phishing it is important that users report these phishing attacks to government agencies, banks and credit card companies. It is only when we report of such phishing emails to the respective banks, credit card companies etc that they will be aware that such fraudulent emails are making the rounds and they will quickly alert all their clients thus saving many innocent people from losing their money.
If you have been a victim of a phishing fraud, make sure that you have all the bank accounts in question closed immediately and inform your banks and credit card companies about your having been deceived into revealing all personal particulars. This is one of the best ways to stop phishing at its source itself.
Another way by which you can stop phishing is by installing anti phishing software in your system so that the software prevents any kind of fraud by scrutinising all the emails coming into your box and alerts you in case there is a suspicious email trying to phish. Once you are alerted, do not on any account open such emails.
Make sure you have an effective anti phishing software installed on your system, which will immediately alert you in case of suspicion. There are spyware programs that effectively detect scam mails and send them to junk.
Most of these phishing emails always play on your sentiments like your having won a lottery ticket etc. You will be naturally thrilled about this and would not think before you unwittingly provide all your personal information and financial information. If in doubt, now, of the following groups. To stop sending phishing e-mail you received to the Internet Fraud Complaint Center of the FBI by filing a complaint on their website. You can also report anti-phishing groups. You can find the addresses of anti-phishing groups online.

You need to know the intentions of some of the online predators so that you can seriously avoid putting yourself at risk. Some kids and adults go missing every day because they let their guard down. Some shocking things could happen to you or your child.
One of the reasons why these predators will pry on the young is because they are vulnerable and want others to like them. They will try to get you to trust them very quickly and then will increase conversation to the point where it becomes something sexual. You will find that there are a lot of online predators who are just looking for a good time, but there are many others who go online for more than just sex.
There are some people who will kidnap a person for their own personal slavery. They will take the young because they are easily taken without someone seeing because they will trust the predator. They will then imprison them for only god knows what reasons and many never escape. Then there are some people who are looking for very young children (both male and female) so that they can sell them on the black market or use them in an sex trade ring. There are hundreds of people who go missing all the time and then they are entered into a world of sex slavery and are never found again.
Then some people will take others for their own needs. They will not only make you do things like sexual acts, but they could also panic and kill because of the shame of the crime. You never know what kind of torture they will come up with, and you never know what will happen to you, once you have because a victim of an online predator.
You will want to take all of these information inconsideration and then try your best to avoid such people. You will want to avoid these people because you have no control over your life when an online predator takes control of your life. You never know if you are ever going to go home and you will never know if you’ll survive an online predator. Most children never returned, and it is rare that only lets you go.
You must be appropriate measures to be safe. You do not want to give all the information so you can avoid putting themselves in danger. You do not want to put in serious jeopardy just think you're somebody. Net is a place you can find a lot of friends, but you will certainly find a lot of enemies.

Social networking sites do not restrict enough information about oneself. When you give your social networking URL to another person, they pretty much get everything and you probably don’t want that to occur immediately.
All of our lives we have been taught NOT to take candy form strangers, or let people we don’t know into your house, and to be wary of peddlers and schemers.
But what happens when these faceless, untrustworthy, uninvited strangers sneak into our lives through the Internet? God forbid, you encounter an unwanted trespasser into your Internet World.
Social networks are everywhere so you can forget the days of small talk and innocent exchanges. We are knee-deep in a societal trend of sharing too much information, and it is only going to get worse.
The worse happens when you unwittingly allow a cyber predator, invader or needy “lonely-heart” type into your private cyber world. This could happen through your social network, blog or email.
I talked with a community college student the other day about an abuse of Online privacy that really frightened her.
She thought she had a “Hi/Bye” relationship with this guy in her class. He said he wanted to give her some reference materials about the class. She did not want to give her email address, but was late for work and consented.
This guy made her life miserable from that moment on. The girl didn’t like the idea but was bullied into releasing her email address. She gave something personal of herself and the guy assumed “instant intimacy” from her action of releasing her personal email.
He pestered this girl unmercifully, so much so that eventually she had to completely stop and create a new email communications system for herself. This was a huge disruption in her life. Something needs to be done to help people screen potential friends. We should be able to enjoy spam free communications with our real friends and associates.

Most people are aware that there are continuous security issues with Microsoft’s Windows operating system and other programs. However, what most people do not realize is how easy it is to significantly improve your computer’s security and reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim to ever increasingly sophisticated threats that lurk on the internet. These steps should take less than a couple of hours to complete and should not clean out your wallet.
1) Windows Update - the first crucial step you need to take to make sure that all your Microsoft applications have all the latest product updates installed. These updates or “patches” address security vulnerabilities and other issues. Microsoft usually issues these updates on a monthly cycle. Visit the Microsoft website or switch on automatic updates from the Windows Control panel. Even if your “new” computer is second hand this is still a critical first step. If you buy a used computer with Windows XP make sure Service Pack 2 or SP2 is installed.
2) Strong Passwords - people often overlook this but having well thought through passwords is an important element of your computer security. A strong password should include at least 8 characters with a mixture of text, symbols and numbers. As a minimum you need to make sure the services most at risk have a strong log-in password. These services include your bank, credit card, other financial services like PayPal, your email address and any other services like Ebay which hackers can use to generate profit.
3) Anti Virus Protection - while it is fair to say the threat of the computer virus has receded during the last couple of years they can still inflict serious damage on your computer. Part of the reason why the threat has reduced is because PC manufactures are now more frequently bundling anti virus packages with their new computers. For example last year my new Dell shipped with a 90-day trial of McAfee’s Internet Security Suite. The best bet here is to purchase a security package which includes firewall and anti virus software as a minimum. Top brands include McAfee and Symantec Norton products. However, Microsoft has recently entered the market with their “OneCare” offering which is very aggressively priced.
4) Firewall - if you are using a broadband connection then a firewall is definite requirement to manage the traffic flowing between your computer and the internet. A firewall monitors the inbound internet traffic passing through the ports of your computer. Better products also monitor outbound traffic from your computer to the internet. As per above the best bet here is buy a firewall application as part of a security package which most vendors offer as standard. If a hardware firewall is included as part of your router package then you do not need anything else. A company called Zone Labs offer a great free firewall product called Zone Alarm which should be used as a minimum. Windows XP does now ship with a free firewall but the product does not monitor outbound communication and therefore I believe does not offer adequate protection.
5) Anti Spyware Tool - this software is the last piece in your basic internet security set up. This tool helps combat spyware and adware. There is a good mixture of free and paid versions on offer. Good free software include Microsoft’s Windows Defender, Spybot S&D or Ewido Anti-Malware. Ewido Anti-Malware is frequently recommended in computer help forums. Be careful if you decide to purchase a solution. There are a number of rogue vendors out there which aggressively push products which offer you little value. Stick to trusted names like Webroot’s Spy Sweeper or PC Tool’s Spyware Doctor. These products always come out well on independent tests.

In todays’ modern world wireless networks have now become commonplace. With wireless networking you can connect multiple computers together without the need for cables. Wireless networking also allows you to share resources such as printers, Internet and files.
To set up your Wireless Local Area Network or (WLAN) for short you will need a Wireless Router. A Router is actually 3 network device in 1. It acts as a Wireless access point, which allows several wireless devices to connect to each other. A switch which essentially directs information over the LAN, and allows computers or printers to communicate with each other as well as share their resources. Finally most routers nowadays provide a firewall, which helps protect your network from outside intrusions by filtering incoming data. Protection and security of your wireless network is vital.
Fortunately, it can be achieved by the average home user with a little bit of know how. Here are some simple steps that you can do to help protect your wireless home network form hackers and keep your personal data secure. As you follow the directions provided with your router you will come across a section, which provides you with the routers user name and password. It is usually marked as admin for the user name and password for, yes you guessed it password. Now this information is publicly known and leaving this information, as its default is the 1st mistake many home users make. Use something original for the user name and password and write it down on a separate piece of paper for your records.
Next, Change the Default SSID. The SSID is a name, which basically identifies your network. Every computer in your network must have the same SSID name. Assign your SSID a name that is familiar to you and write it down for future reference. Now we come to your WLAN security options. This is where people usually make another mistake. I have seen countless WLAN that were using WEP, (wireless equivalent privacy) encryption which is a weak form of encryption. The FBI has recently reported that WEP can be hacked within 3minutes. WPA or the newer WPA 2 provide much stronger security. All wireless network equipments support some kind of encryption. Encryption allows your data to be encrypted before sending it out to the Internet.
The computer, which receives the information, must know how to unscramble the data to read it. You must use the strongest encryption technology that your router and or Network card allows. If you are able to see the options for WPA 2 then that in most cases it is your best bet, however if your computer needs to support older legacy devices then WPA or even WEP might be your only option. I hope this guide has given you a basic understanding of the security that is needed to keep your WLAN safe from outside intrusions.

As more and more people begin to use the internet, be it for communication, online banking, investment or shopping, the potential danger of hackers and malicious attackers increase. While some may simply be after information for phishing or identity resale purposes, others are more dangerous, looking for computers to use to launch attacks such as the infamous Denial of Service or other viruses or trojans at other unknowing targets. The list below contains some easy, cheap methods to make your computer secure. While there are other ways to do so, following the ten steps below will help you begin to protect your computer and your private information.
1. Backup your files and store them in a safe place away from your computer
2. Frequently patch and update your operating system, anti-virus, web browser and internet protection in order to prevent hackers from taking advantage of loopholes in software. You can update your windows operating system quickly at [http://www.windowsupdate.microsoft.com] by using the update wizard. Microsoft Office updates can also be found at http://www.officeupdate.microsoft.com
3. Install a proper firewall. With both a proper hardware and software firewall, most viruses, worms, trojans, malicious programs and adware are removed before they cause any major trouble or damage. It is important to update your firewall regularly as well.
4. Configure your browser and email settings for best security. Programs like ActiveX and Java are most commonly used by hackers to plant malicious programs into your system. Cookies can also be used to track your internet surfing in order to build an online profile of you. A good way to overcome these problems is to configure your internet browser to “high” security settings. At minimum, set your security settings to “high” for the internet and “medium” for your trusted sites zone.
5. Automatically update your antivirus software and internet security softwares. This allows you to receive the most current versions to prevent your computer security from being compromised.
6. Only run email attachments from people you know. And even then, only when you know what you are openning. Often, hackers can use a compromised email address to spam viruses or worms to infect other people. It is not enough to recognise the email address but rather you need to recognise the attachment.
7. Do not run unknown .exe programs. This is the most dangerous thing to do as they often contain trojan horse scripts waiting to infect other computers.
8. Disable hidden filename extensions. This allows you to identify and spot any unknown filenames or programs that may be running on your computer. The Windows default option hides filename extensions so you will have to disable this option.
9. Disconnect your computer from the internet and turn it off when not in use. This prevents hackers from attacking your computer, as attached to the network.
10. Make a bootable floppy to a CD before your computer experiences hostile security violation. This allows you to recover your data and system operations after a successful attack on your computer.

There are so many companies out there which claim to have the best free spyware remover tools available which are supposedly able to remove all infectious files from your computer.Finding the best free spyware remover software program can be difficult if you are not sure what to look for in a program of this nature and are generally not aware about what spyware is. Before I do a personal review below on what I believe is the best free spyware remover tool I would like to briefly talk about what spyware is.
It is defined as any software application that installs and harvests itself on your operating system without your awareness and accesses personal information. It is so easy to become infected with spyware as most of us are constantly surfing the internet each day and the internet is getting larger which poses more risk to you as an individual. There are many other forms of malicious infections which a computer can become prey to. Adware is another one which comes primarily in the form of advertisements and pop ups which which are bundled into shareware applications which you download and install on your pc. Both the above mentioned infections are equally dangerous and can have disasterous effects on your computer if they are not removed immediately. So how will you know if your pc is infected? If your pc starts acting very slow, displays pop ups and starts showing strange unknown default startup homepages then you are probably infected and should fix your PC.
I give Ksoftspyse as the best free tool to remove spyware, as it is very easy to use and has gained enormous popularity on the Internet.
